Indirect Speech - Change in Exclamatory Sentence

Change in Exclamatory Sentence:

If the direct command ends with an exclamation mark, we change this to a full stop in the indirect command. We use the reporting verbs exclaimed, praised, cried out, applauded, regretted, wished, desired etc. With exclaimed we generally use an expressions for feelings such as exclaimed with fearor joy etc.We also use the conjunction that to introduce the reported sentence and change to an appropriate past tense.

  • "Go away!" said Raveena. (Direct Command)
  • Raveena told me to go away.  (Indirect Command)
  • Juhi said, "Dont touch my water bottle!" (Direct Command)
  • Juhi told everyone not to touch her water bottel. (Indirect Command)
  • Rushmi said, " What a pleasant surprise!" (Direct Command)
  • Rushmi exclaimed with pleasure that it was a pleasant surprise. (Indirect Command)
  • Change in Narration : Exclamatory Sentences : - Sentences containing sudden expressions of joy, sorrow, anger, applause, surprise, contempt are called exclamatory sentences.

  • Reporting verb : - Exclaimed with joy, exclaimed with sorrow, exclaimed with surprise, exclaimed with appluase, exclaimed with anger, exclaimed with contempt, etc, is used according to the tenor of the sentence.
  • Conjunction 'that' is used as usual.
  • Words such as Also, Bravo, Oh, Wow, Wah, Hurrah, used in direct speech are left out in indirect narration.
  • Exclamatory sentence is transformed into assertive.
  • For any wish 'like' 'If I were a bird', 'If I were the PM', etc reporting verb 'wish' is used.
  • All other rules regarding change of pronoun and change of tense also apply.
  • Look at the following examples.

    1.  He said, " If I were a bird !"                                                        Direct

          He wished that he would be a bird.                                           Indirect

    2.  Rani said, " Alas ! I have been ruined".                                       Direct

         Rani exclaimed with sorrow that she had been ruined.                 Indirect

    3.  The lady said, " Oh ! My pet is dead."                                        Direct

         The lady exclaimed with sorrow that her pet was dead.               Indirect

    4.  He said, " What a beautiful girl Madhuri is ! ".                             Direct

         He exclaimed with praise that Madhuri was a beautiful girl          Indirect

    5.  The captain said, " Well done! My friends".                                 Direct

          The captain exclaimed with applause that his friends had done well.        Indirect

    6.   The player said, " Hurrah! We have won the match".                    Direct

           The played exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.       Indirect
